Kiela Hall is a recurring (now main) character in the original Freeform series Grown-ish, which is a spinoff of the ABC series, Black-ish.

Character info[]

Kiela is a freshman journalism student at Cal U and resident of Hawkins Hall who piques the interest of Doug Edwards. She is the younger sister of Luca Hall. She is very outspoken, a little bit of a rebel and has a deep passion when it comes to fighting for social justice.

Grown-ish (Season 4)[]

Kiela is introduced when Doug Edwards heads to her dorm to inform her to turn her music down. She bonds fairly quickly with him as he stays over and hangs out with her for a while. Kiela was soon revealed to be Luca Hall’s little sister. When an unjust killing of a black man named Marcus Jennings happens, she is shown to be very direct about the importance of the issue and fighting back against the system. Kiela is disappointed when fighting for the cause doesn’t seem to work, when it’s discovered that justice was not served. She protests with her brother and his friends and even gets tear-gassed in the process. When her brother finds out about her and Doug through their texts, Doug promises him that he won’t do anything with his sister anymore because he doesn’t want to ruin their friendship. Kiela still messes around with Doug behind Luca’s back, despite Doug’s promise to him.

Relationships[]

Doug Edwards - Kiela meets Doug when he goes to her dorm to tell her to keep her music down. She apologizes but is also caught with weed in her place and when she asks him not to snitch, he instructs her not to do it again. Doug gets excited when he sees a pic on Kiela’s wall that is a block away from his Aunt’s house. She reveals to him about how she always wanted to go there but her dad would never let her. Doug and Kiela flirt with each other and he hangs out at her place, getting high with her. Doug talks to Luca about the girl he met at Hawkins who he’s really into, when Kiela approaches them and Luca reveals that she is his little sister. Doug is shocked and nervous from this revelation, because he was romantically interested in the sister of one of his best friends.

When Kiela sees Doug being tone deaf by promoting a party he’s hosting after the discovery of an unjust killing of another unarmed black man, she confronts him and he brushes off her frustrations. She takes it upon herself to let people in his party for free, as long as they sign the petition to arrest the cops who killed Marcus even after Doug told her no. Kiela expresses to Doug that turning a blind eye to the issue makes him a bad black person. When it’s announced that the cops who killed Marcus Jennings are getting no charges brought against them, Kiela sadly leaves, believing that everything Doug said was right and none of it matters. Doug goes to Kiela’s dorm to let her know that he doesn’t want to be right. He opens up for the first time about his real thoughts on the issue and how he pushes it all down, as a means to survive. He feels like he has to push it all to the back of his mind, so he’s not paralyzed and doesn’t break. Kiela comforts Doug and unexpectedly kisses him. She apologizes for the sudden action but he tells her not to and they kiss again.

Doug and Kiela continue to flirt with each other and soon, Luca finds out about their romantic interest in one another when he finds their texts. When Doug sees how upset he is over it, he promises not to mess around with Kiela anymore because he doesn’t want to ruin their friendship. That said, it’s revealed Doug and Kiela are still seeing each other when they’re seen making out by Jazz Forster. Kiela makes it clear to Doug that she doesn’t want to sneak around anymore because she finds it ridiculous. He assures her that it’s not possible because of Luca’s negative feelings about it and doesn’t want to mess up things between the whole trifecta. Kiela is disappointed hearing this and walks away from him.
