Nomi Segal is one of the main characters in the original Freeform series Grown-ish, which is a spinoff of the ABC series, Black-ish.

Character Info[]

Nomi Segal is a Jewish American. She is bisexual, but she is not out to her family until season 2. She is a freshman in season 1 and then a sophomore in season 2, a junior in season 3, and a senior in season 4. At the start of the third season, she is revealed to be pregnant from a one-night stand. During the first half of season 3, she drops out of Cal U and returns to her parents' home while dealing with her pregnancy. In the second half of Season 3, she returns to campus with her daughter Luna.

Grown-ish (Season 1)[]

In the first season, Nomi is shown to be the closest to Zoey and Vivek, as they all three hung out together often. She is out as a bisexual to everyone accept her parents, because she’s afraid they will treat her differently. She develops a relationship with a nice guy named Dave. The relationship is shortlived, due to the irony of her finding out that Dave is also bisexual. She realizes she can’t be with him knowing he’s also been with guys, which causes them to leave things on bad terms. It’s discovered that Nomi is a bit of a troll online and likes to put down anything or anyone that seems popular or loved. That aside, she is shown to be a very good friend. She comforted Zoey after her breakup with Cash Mooney and kissed Ana who was feeling bad about not having a lot of experiences that the other girls had, while also looking after her when she got heavily drunk. At the end of the season, Nomi encouraged Zoey to choose Luca out of all the guys, who ironically became her best friend later in the show.

Grown-ish (Season 2)[]

During her sophomore year, Nomi moves into an apartment with Zoey and Ana. She also takes hooking up to a whole new level in the second season. She brings dozens of women home for one night stands, which eventually becomes a problem for her roommates. Ana accuses her of being a misogynist for targeting straight women looking to experiment. It’s revealed she does this because there’s no chance of anything ever getting serious. Nomi starts to get advice from Professor Paige Hewson about being out and proud with who she is. Nomi finally comes out to her parents when her talking sessions with Professor Hewson gives her the courage to do so. They slowly start to fall for each other which leads to a secret relationship between the two. The inappropriate romance starts to take a toll on Nomi, who’s forced to keep it confidential and make constant concessions for the relationship. Nomi finally has enough and breaks up with Paige when she lashes out at her for telling her best friends. Nomi helps Ana avoid Aaron after their entanglement and supports Zoey’s decision to go to London for a good job opportunity after her breakup with Luca. In the finale, she gets a phone call from the Cal U Independent Ethics Committee to inform her that there’s been allegations against Professor Hewson regarding inappropriate conduct. The storyline is no longer addressed or continued in the following season. She ends season two by celebrating the end of her sophomore year with the girls.

Grown-ish (Season 3)[]

Nomi starts her junior year with the shocking reveal that she’s pregnant. When her friends interrogate her of how it happened, she explains it was a drunken one night stand with a guy after hanging out and having margaritas with Zoey, which was due to her sadness from her breakup with Professor Hewson. She confides in Zoey about her pregnancy and how she’s actually feeling. She opens up about how at every turn when she had a choice to stop it from happening, she didn’t. She admits that because she was in such an emotionally messed up place after the breakup, she didn’t think it would be the worst thing in the world having a kid who would love her unconditionally. Nomi was unsure if she was gonna keep the baby because her parents thought it was best to place it up for adoption. She admits that she wants to keep it but she agrees with her parents thinking it’ll be too hard to balance getting a proper education and being a mom. She discloses the father’s name as Phil. She refused to tell him that he was going to be a father, even after some of her friends encouraged her to. Ana looked him up and found valuable information about him in case Nomi ever changed her mind. She ends up leaving to go home and be with her parents for the rest of the pregnancy. Nomi has a baby girl and names her Luna. When Nomi comes back to Cal U, the girls celebrate her return and Ana nicely prepares and decorates Nomi’s room with stuff for Luna. Nomi educates Aaron and Doug on their close minded views regarding Vivek’s sexuality, which ultimately leads to the guys mending their friendship. Nomi is still stubborn about letting Phil know about the existence of his child when Ana prods her about it. Ana meets Phil herself and interrogates him, which unintentionally scared him off. He returns and states his disappointment to Nomi for standing him up and sending her friend instead. Nomi apologizes and admits she was nervous meeting him, which he is confused about because they had an amazing night together. Phil takes Nomi back to his Aunt’s house to give her the “16 Candles” moment she always wanted, which she told him about a year prior. Nomi thinks it’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for her. As soon as she’s about to tell him about Luna, he kisses her and they sleep together. After talking to Luca about it, she believes she can’t tell him anymore because he has his whole life ahead of him. She eventually gives into informing Phil of their daughter’s existence when she sees a note left by her father to Luna regarding Nomi being the best part of his day when she was a child. Nomi ends the season by telling Phil about their daughter.

Grown-ish (Season 4)[]

Nomi starts off the season on a Mexico vacation with all of her best friends. She tells Zoey that she also wants to do a “you do you” weekend like the other girls to clear her head so she can stop obsessing over Phil, who hasn’t texted her back since she told him about Luna. Nomi almost exposes Ana in front of Javi about her having suspicions that he’s cheating on her, which leads to Ana insulting Nomi about her most likely being a single mom for the rest of her life. Ana later apologizes to her and Nomi comforts Ana who’s highly upset over Javi. Nomi begins struggling hard with the balance of motherhood and school. Between taking care of Luna, her classes and studying for the LSATS, she didn’t even have time to find a babysitter, so Ana helped her get one. She revealed Phil told her that he wanted nothing to do with their baby. During BLM protests and riots, Nomi expresses her frustration with the people who are looting and burning people’s businesses because it’s not gonna help hold racist cops accountable. Zoey informs Nomi that rioting is the last resort for people who have just been ignored for too long. Nomi makes it clear she’s aware that human life is more important than property but she feels bad for the small business owners who built their livelihoods from nothing, and how some opportunists are using a man’s death as an excuse to destroy that. Zoey tells Nomi that her choosing to focus on the looting and rioting is a part of a longstanding history of racist thinking. Nomi believes Zoey is calling her a racist and is extremely offended. Nomi becomes very defensive and doesn’t want to talk about it anymore and Jazz lets her know that they view the world differently and that sometimes she can’t help what’s ingrained in her. Nomi gets really hurt and emotional and leaves to go call her mother and confide in her. The conversation with her mother opens her eyes to what Jazz and Zoey were trying to teach her when she realizes her mother had the same reaction she did. Nomi apologizes to Jazz and Zoey and admits that she was raised to see the world in a very specific way and she’ll never see it the way they do. She realized that no matter how liberal her environment is or how expanded her world view is… she’ll always have some kind of blinders on. Jazz and Zoey thank her for hearing them and they make up. Nomi encourages Zoey to confront her boss about stealing her design because if she did it to her, than she’s probably done it before and will continue to do it to others. Nomi admits she hasn’t had sex since her last hook up with Phil, which prompts Vivek to try and help her get laid. He fails miserably and she demands him to stop. When trying to leave the luau with Zoey, she bumps into someone and it’s revealed to be Luna’s father, Phil.
